Syda-Productions/ShutterstockIsotretinoin (originally known as Accutane; now there are several generic versions available) is designed for patients with the most severe nodulocystic acne as well as for patients whose acne has proven resistant to other treatments. According to Dr. Howe, isotretinoin works by regulating the shedding of skin cells in hair follicles and shrinking enlarged oil glands. “Nearly all acne patients clear while on isotretinoin, once the proper dose has been reached. And about 60 percent of treated patients remain clear of acne for life.” Isotretinoin is usually covered by insurance, but often subject to prior approval. It’s important to note that there are a number of side effects associated with isotretinoin—namely that if taken by a pregnant woman, it causes birth defects. For this reason, all female patients of childbearing age must register with Ipledge before starting isotretinoin. Be sure to talk to your about alternate treatments before deciding on this course of action.

I was prescribed the birth control pill at age 16 due to irregular periods, and stayed on it until about age 22 when I started to notice severe cystic acne all over my chin and jaw. I’ve never had more than a few small zits before, so I knew something was totally out of whack with my body. Looking back, this all began around the same time I started experiencing a multitude of other symptoms like hair loss, fatigue and mood swings. At the time, I blamed everything on the pill. This was also around the time I started to become interested in natural medicine and nutrition, so going off of the pill felt like a natural progression to me. When I went off of the pill, my acne improved for a short period and then came back with a vengeance which led me to step 2, reassessing my diet.

While it’s important to understand what causes acne and worsens a current skin condition, it’s also important to understand the things that don’t affect your acne, no matter what you’ve been told. As acne is such a prevalent issue, a plethora of conjectures have been made about the causes and treatments of this skin condition. This has resulted in a wide array of acne myths that hold little to no merit.

Pimples (pustules). These are inflamed hair follicles. The bacteria in the follicle multiply, attracting infection-fighting cells. These release substances that cause irritation and redness. The follicle then ruptures and spills the contents into the surrounding skin. This causes more inflammation.

just a word of caution with this regime…that you have to be patient….sometimes for an instant your body doesnt approve the change…give it a little time to adapt to the new environment and then observe how it behaves..!!!

I’d had enough of it—the click-farming games, for one, but also Facebook itself. Already in 2010, it felt like a malicious attention market where people treated friends as latent resources to be optimized. Compulsion rather than choice devoured people’s time. Apps like FarmVille sold relief for the artificial inconveniences they themselves had imposed.

Garlic has well known antibiotic properties making it an excellent treatment for pimples and acne. Peel and mash eight cloves of fresh garlic and apply to face avoiding the area around the eyes. Leave on for about 15 minutes and wash off with a warm cloth. ;-);-);-)

Great post. You are right about also addressing the causes of Acne instead of merely treating the symptoms. You might want to add Ceylon Cinnamon and honey to the list of topical treatments. It is very effective due to powerful anti bacterial properties and the bleaching effect of Cinnamon which can even out scars. More importantly drinking a cup of Ceylon cinnamon Tea is very good for addressing the causes such as excess sugar, poor nutrient absorption, bad gut bacteria and poor blood circulation. You can use ordinary cinnamon, but that has high levels of Coumarin which can damage your liver.
