Garlic is thought to be a good natural remedy for acne because of its supposed antibacterial properties. You can either ingest it, or apply it topically to help reduce the severity of your breakouts and prevent them in the future. If you can get the juice from the garlic, great, if you can’t, mashing it up and putting it in some water is fine. Never, ever, ever, apply garlic to your skin without diluting it first. If you’re hesitant about the garlic smell, look at the silver lining-others may be a bit taken aback, but you won’t have to worry about Dracula creeping around either.

Over use of any glycolic acid treatment can be drying – but not with this one – Ive been using daily with no problems.

Unless there are side effects such as excessive dryness or allergy, it is important to give each regimen or drug enough time to work before giving up on it and moving on to other methods. Using modern methods, doctors can help clear up the skin of just about everyone.

An imbalance of one system can disrupt the body functions as a whole. Therefore, a holistic approach will investigate well beyond symptoms and look ‘upstream’ to discover what imbalance is actually causing your symptoms.
“Whether it’s because of personal experience or familiarity with studies that have been done on the subject, I’d say dermatologists as a whole are much more sensitive to the psycho-social aspects of acne than in the past,” Huang said. “For me personally, it’s something I can relate to.”

A few weeks ago I decided it was time for a last-ditch effort. Why now? I just got into a new relationship. My boyfriend, Ben, tells me he loves me no matter what my skin looks like. But I’ll admit, sometimes I doubt that. And I know I won’t really feel good about myself until my acne is gone. So I make an appointment with Ava Shamban, MD, owner of the Laser Institute-Dermatology in Santa Monica, Calif. Shamban is the celebrity dermatologist on “Extreme Makeover,” and the author of “Heal Your Skin.” If she can’t help me, I’m afraid I’m un-helpable. But here comes that hope again.
“Things are so much better today because there are so many more options for treating acne,” said Sarah Taylor, MD, a dermatologist with Wake Forest Baptist Health. “While OTC products are pretty much the same as they have been for years – just different concentrations of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid in various forms such as cleansers, gels and creams – the prescription world has really changed in the past 10 years or so. We’re much better equipped to deal with all different types of acne.”

Spironolactone (Aldactone) is a diuretic with anti-androgen properties. It is used often in older women for whom oral contraceptives have additional medical risks. It has been shown to help relieve acne, especially when used together with an antibiotic. If taken during pregnancy, it may cause genital problems in the male fetus and, for that reason, should not be used in someone pregnant or planning pregnancy. It is a potassium-sparing diuretic drug, so people taking this medication should take additional potassium supplementation. Hormonal therapy is not used in males as the doses needed to suppress the acne would usually cause feminization problems such as gynecomastia and possible sexual dysfunction.
