Sad but true: Bacne happens. Those pores deep down your back get clogged, too. Luckily, Elizabeth Hale, a dermatologist in New York City, has helpful advice on how to treat (and prevent) backside breakouts. “One of the most common causes of back acne is sweaty clothes,” says Hale. “Hair follicles in the back can trap sweat and bacteria and cause breakouts, so the first thing is to get out of that sweaty sports bra after the gym.”

Juniper oil contains effective astringent properties which tighten the pores and make your skin firm. It also contains disinfectant and antibacterial properties which fight off the bacteria causing cystic acne. As it contains very strong astringent properties, juniper oil should be used only by diluting in carrier oil.

Isotretinoin (formally known as Accutane but now available as the brands Claravis, Sotret, Myorisan, Amnesteem, and Absorica) attacks all causes of acne. The recommended dosage for most of these medications is to take a pill once or twice daily for about 5 months. For most people, this clears the skin completely and permanently. If it recurs, you can repeat the treatment. Women should avoid becoming pregnant while taking this drug.

Conventional Dairy: Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, conventional dairy products can be hard on the digestive system. Many people see an improvement in their acne when they cut down or eliminate dairy products like milk, cheese and ice cream. If you want to check if dairy is a culprit, try eliminating it from your diet for two weeks and see if your cystic acne improves. If it does, then you know that dairy is not agreeing with you. You can choose to remain dairy-free, or you can slowly reintroduce dairy back into your diet. Choosing better-quality dairy can be helpful as well.

There are so many rumors surrounding diet and acne, it’s hard to know what’s right and what’s wrong. Amongst these rumors is the claim that avocado (eating it and sometimes applying it topically) will make you breakout, because it’s higher in fat. As far as I am concerned, there’s no concrete evidence to prove this, and far more people seem to have success using it than not. It’s so full of good vitamins and nutrients it seems it can really help tone down the acne. If you have sensitive skin, too, it’s quite mild. There are different combinations you can try, as with most home remedies, but this one blends together avocado and honey.

Accutane: This prescription strength acne medicine is one of the most popular and effective ways to treat moderate to severe acne. Unlike traditional acne medications, Accutane has potential long-term benefits that continue after your course of treatment. This is one of the most important medications dermatologists prescribe to prevent acne scarring.

In most cases of cystic acne, you’ll need to see a dermatologist to clear it up. Whether it’s a prescription medication or surgical removal, your dermatologist is your best resource. Acne cysts are so difficult to treat at home. Cystic acne can also lead to significant scarring.

A 2006 Harvard study found that girls who drank two or more glasses of milk daily had about a 20% higher risk of acne than those who had less than a glass a week. Studies published last year and in 2008 suggested that fat-free milk in particular, which is higher in sugar than whole milk, might be a culprit. (Another hypothesis is that hormones in dairy products play a role.) If you regularly drink fat-free, consider switching to 1% milk or a nondairy alternative. Look for something that has fewer than 10 g of sugar per serving. One to try: Pacific Beverages Unsweetened Almond Original. (Buy now: 3-pack, $17, amazon.com.)

Step 3 BENZOYL PEROXIDE (Only at night) Wash off SA and run an ice cube over the affected areas, to cool and soothe (be careful not to freeze the skin!) Apply the BP (kept cold in refrigerator), but run ice cube across palm of hand, so product doesn’t warm up when you rub and apply to face (in identical manner as the SA and the GA). Leave the BP on for 10 minutes, and lie down with ice packs on the affected areas (opens pores, reduces inflammation, relaxes you). When you’re through, wipe off excess BP with a soft cloth. Allow the rest to sit overnight.

You may want to slow down on eating too much cheese or ice cream, as it may be the culprit behind your cystic breakouts. Your skin acts as an excretory system to get rid of things that your body is not in agreement with, explains Rouleau. “So when you eat too much dairy (and since dairy is naturally harder to digest), it comes out in the form of cystic blemishes in the lower area of the face.”

This kitchen staple has many surprising beauty uses, including as an acne-clearing facial cleanser and mask. Make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water and rub into your face with gentle, circular strokes. Leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. “Baking soda is drying and removes oil,” explains Dr. Jaliman. “It also makes a great exfoliant.”

Doing any of these treatments regularly is guaranteed to give you best results. You will have a clear and bright complexioned skin with these treatments. In the meantime, do not pick on the acne as they will leave behind scars. Picking on acne can also cause the infection to spread further.

A much stronger defense mechanism against breakouts is Accutane, a form of oral vitamin A that reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands in your skin and helps your skin renew itself more quickly. “It’s used in the treatment of severe acne, and is usually given after other acne medicines or antibiotics have been tried without success,” Peredo explains. “Due to its strength and potential side effects, however, this treatment isn’t typically considered as a first solution, but it can be quite effective when other remedies aren’t working.” Your doctor will likely ask whether or not you’re pregnant or trying to conceive in the near future before writing you a prescription for Accutane, as it’s been shown to cause birth defects. Peredo tells SELF, however, that taking Accutane in general will not affect your child-bearing potential for the future.

This type of oral medication is only useful and appropriate for acne cases in adult women. Spironolactone is not designed for acne treatment, but has proven to clear the skin after long-term use. This acne medicine is actually meant to treat conditions that result from too much aldosterone by preventing the body from absorbing too much salt and regulating potassium levels.

“The nutrients you’re putting in your mouth eventually show up on your skin,” says Jessica Wu, MD, a Los Angeles-based dermatologist, and author of Feed Your Face. That said, there simply aren’t enough studies to pinpoint any one specific food as an acne-instigator for absolutely everyone, she says. To get one step closer to clearer skin, cut back on foods with a high glycemic index (think cookies, cake, and chips) and dairy, suggests Diane Madfes, MD, a dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mount Sinai Medical Center. While these two types of food may not necessarily cause acne, studies show an association between them and breakouts. Load up on foods full of inflammation-fighting omega-3s, like wild salmon or trout, Wu advises.

Blackheads are the result of hair follicles becoming clogged with dead skin cells, oil, and sometimes bacteria. The oil has ‘oxidized’ as it reacts with air, which gives it the appearance of being black. A lot of various factors can play into whats causing the openings to become so clogged, so its a good idea to double check anything you’re using on your face (like make-up, foundation, sunscreen, moisturizer, etc.) and maybe experiment with a gentler method/product.
