Vitex, a whole-fruit extract for treating premenstrual acne. It’s thought to act on follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels in the pituitary. It’s said to increase progesterone levels and reduce estrogen levels. Vitex should not be taken by pregnant or nursing women.
Grade IV: This is the most severe of all acne grades, and individuals with severe acne will exhibit a large number of papules, pustule, nodules, and pus-filled cysts. Severe acne is often observed on varied areas of the body, including the back and chest. This type of acne is the most likely to cause permanent skin damage in the form of scarring and disfiguration if treated improperly.
Today, virtually every case of acne can be successfully treated. Dermatologists can help treat existing acne, prevent new breakouts and reduce your chance of developing scars. If you have questions or concerns about caring for your skin, you should make an appointment to see a dermatologist.
Spironolactone (Aldactone) is a diuretic with anti-androgen properties. It is used often in older women for whom oral contraceptives have additional medical risks. It has been shown to help relieve acne, especially when used together with an antibiotic. If taken during pregnancy, it may cause genital problems in the male fetus and, for that reason, should not be used in someone pregnant or planning pregnancy. It is a potassium-sparing diuretic drug, so people taking this medication should take additional potassium supplementation. Hormonal therapy is not used in males as the doses needed to suppress the acne would usually cause feminization problems such as gynecomastia and possible sexual dysfunction.
Since everyone gets acne at some time, the right time to treat it is when it becomes bothersome or when the potential for scarring develops. This can be when severe acne flares suddenly, for mild acne that just won’t go away, or even when a single pimple decides to show up the week before one’s prom or wedding.
Leave on for at least 10 minutes, or overnight. Reapply several times a day, washing face thoroughly after each time. Make sure to use a moisturizer afterwards as well if you feel like your skin is getting dry.
If you are prescribed antibiotics for acne, discuss these concerns with your doctor. Make sure your acne treatment is reviewed regularly. It’s best to limit a course of antibiotics to 3 months, if possible. Apply topical benzoyl peroxide and/or a topical retinoid to areas affected by acne while on antibiotics and after they have been stopped. Find out if other, non-antibiotic treatment might be suitable for you.

All the dermatologists we talked to agreed that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to acne. Every patient responds to treatments differently, and sometimes it can get worse before it gets better. But with the help of your dermatologist, you can find an acne treatment regimen that works for you. And, yes, we do stress how helpful it is to work with a derm to get it right.
You may have prayed for your pimples to go away when you were in high school, but the sad truth is that most adults still deal with blemishes from time to time. And if you feel like a zit only pops up when you don’t have any store-bought acne treatments on hand, you’re not alone. That’s why we asked dermatologists for their favorite home remedies for pimples. These treatments use ingredients you probably already have on hand in your kitchen or medicine cabinet.

Cystic acne is unsightly—but worse than that, it can be painful. And what’s with blemishes cropping up at the most inopportune times?! always seem to strike right before a major event or big work presentation.
Wash your face using oils. Known as the Oil Cleansing Method(OCM), this is a popular method of cleansing in Asia, and is a growing trend. OCM is an alternative cleansing method that is gentler for skin, and of interest for sensitive skin types.
I don’t really think there’s a magic bullet out there for acne. Let’s be reasonable. There is no instant cure that will completely get rid of that ugly blemish and leave you completely flawless. With that being said, Citrus Clear comes pretty close. It rapidly speeds up healing and reduces my breakouts. Is Citrus Clear perfect? Of course not. But does it work? YES!
I’m someone who loves summer and the heat. I love getting extra sweaty at SoulCycle. I love hanging out at the beach (covered in sunscreen, of course). What I don’t love, however, is the back and chest acne that can come with all of that. Every summer, after six months of being zit-free, I break out like crazy on my body. And I know I’m not the only one. That’s why I asked New York–based dermatologist Valerie Goldburt how to get rid of my embarrassing bacne (and chest-ne?) once and for all.
For me, in the evening I wash my face with a warm sea salt bath, the week before my period I pat my face down with a product from Canada called, “Nature’s Aid”. Then I apply a bunch of oils mixed together; Bottle one: avocado oil, vitamin E, a wee bit of castor oil, grapefruit essential oil, cedar essential oil and massage this well into my face. Bottle two: olive oil, castor oil, vitamin E oil, lavender and geranium essential oils.
